I recently had the task of finding a blazer for one of my Football player clients, Fearon Wright. I love to make my clients look super cool and stylish. Simply relying on price alone won’t cut it. You need a proper fit. Now fitting the big guys- that is a specialty. Knowing how to determine blazer fit, takes a little time and minimal effort, with a big pay off of knowledge and style.

After coming up with job I decided that others need help doing so for themselves when not calling me for help. By the way- ALWAYS CALL ME, but if I am in NYC and can’t make it to Hawaii. Here is how Tailor Tape-not for kidnapping the Shear Bearer Measuring to determine blazer fit is a matter of measuring your chest and knowing your shirt sleeve length. You’ll need to obtain a tailor’s or seamstress’ soft measuring tape if you want to know how to determine blazer fit. First, measure your chest by wrapping the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest just below your arms. Doing this yourself is easy and helps determine blazer fit when you extend your shoulder blades as you hold the tape. I wouldn’t suggest the metal carpenters measuring tape- it will be off. Once you get this size- you have the jacket size you need to start trying on some blazers and sport coats. Cuffs Shouldn’t look like they are trying to tie your shoes A suit jacket or blazer cuff should end a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch before reaching your hand. This way you can wear a long-sleeve dress shirts without the two cuffs competing for movement. Jacket cuff should not rest against the back of your hand, and it should never touch the base of your palm. Blazer aren’t meant to protect you from the elements, this is about style. Roll up your sleeves and get dirty. Okay, don’t really roll up your sleeve. PLEASE DON’T! Also don’t be afraid to show some sleeve. This was the way it was meant to be. The amount, however, varies from a quarter to one-half inch of shirt cuff. The shirt cuff should fit your arm properly and rest just at base of your palm. You could have your jacket sleeves altered to get this look. Honestly its and investment in your fashion future. A small price to pay for a lifetime of models and actress giving you head nods for class and style.

Proper vent fit

Vent fit for a suit jacket or blazer is all about ease when in sitting position. You will probably be doing this between toasts. A center vent is the most versatile and practical for all men and it should never look stressed or pulled apart. If the vent looks splayed or pulled when you walk then the blazer is either too small or the cut is too narrow. The fabric should lay on itself smoothly. A double-vent blazer has an aristocratic look, but once again, you’ll be sitting on the back flap, which means dry cleaners will know you better than mom. Many Italian jackets are vent-less, and this has its place in the world, but you will be left with one crumbled/wrinkled jacket. I say play it by stage. Standing performance or sitting and taking it in. Short and Long. Not a Stock Tip Now this seems ovibous but it is not. Clothing falls different on Shaq than it does Mugsy, even if for some reason they were wearing the same size. A 5’4″ man should not buy the designer blazer in a 42L (long) just because its on sale. They should determine whether they need a short, regular or long jacket. One’s height is the key to finding out the proper jacket. Switching from regular to long can make a tremendous difference on the final look and finish of a outfit. Trust me, dealing with Bigger dudes, I have this understanding.

Guidelines:
If you are 5’7”, a short jacket length is needed.
If you are 5’8” to 6’, you are a regular.
If you are 6’ to 6’3”, you require a long
Anyone over 6’3” is an extra long. Just throw on a robe- I am kidding.
Properly fitting your blazer for length helps with the way the jacket will drape and your overall look.

We’ve received questions about the difference and the better selection between EDT(or Eau de Toilette) and EDP(or Eau de Parfum). It is very important to know the differences because of the scent not having a similar smells. You wouldn’t want to spend money on something that doesn’t smell like the perfume or cologne you smelled at the fragrance counter of the mall. Well we did our research for you so read the following and you will be able to decide on your next purchase.

It is simply a matter of the amount or concentration of oils in the fragrance. These oils or “juice” as they are called provide the intensity factor. The highest concentration of “juice” is in perfume (or parfum). Next would be Eau de Parfum, then Eau de Toilette, and finally Eau de Cologne. Actually, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Cologne are generally interchangeable, particularly in Men’s fragrances.

The higher the concentration of “juice” the longer your fragrance will last, and the less you need to apply. PERFUME (PARFUM) consist of a 15-30% concentration of perfume essence and is the strongest fragrance available. This means that not only do you need to
use less, but also that the fragrance lasts longer, typically for up to 6 hours, depending on skin type.

EAU DE TOILETTE (EDT)
This is a lighter more delicate fragrance, with a 4-8% concentration of
the essence, and therefore most suited to everyday use. It is normally less expensive than Eau de Parfum, and lasts for 2 to 4 hours.

EAU DE PARFUM (EDP)
This is lighter than Perfume, with an 8-15% concentration, and so is
less expensive but still has long lasting characteristics, from 3 to 5
hours.

Valentino on a flip flop is something out of left field. These things are pretty killer. Aren’t they Rocking? I stand for the red ones just because they are wild. It’s like something Mickey Mouse’s wife would wear. Am I lying? The conservative fashion-snob side of me is a little shocked by this… I mean, it’s VALENTINO the Last Emperor of Italian Fashion on a FLIP FLOP, people!!

If you know anything about my taste in fashion or read my previous blogs on myspace, then you will know that flip flop do not fit on my block. But I might just  have to let these slide.
I’m  not really big into flip-flops. Sure, there were those uber-Californians and those “hood” Caribbeans in my high school who wore their battered flip-flops faithfully through fall. I’ve seen flip flops of all types growing up from Rockaway, Queens to Long Beach, Long Island. It just never spoke class or high fashion to me.

The ones I had were never that comfortable, plus they always felt somehow de-masculined. Maybe its the THONG toe thing.

Then, on my quest for cool new trends I discovered something from Valentino Garavani. Still not for me, but for ladies- here is something I won’t write up for a future article.

Included are some pictures of a few other creations by the Itallian power house. Still better than what I saw on Beach 90th last summer.

The team and I decided to go to Baltimore, Maryland for a styling and fashion consultant trip. Fearon Wright, the mvp of The Baltimore Mariners invited me to the first Home game of the season. They were already 1-0 due to a win in Pittsburgh. I arrived in town early to conduct business, which included outfitting the team with Luxury Street wears. Brands like premium Raw Blue, Blak Label and an old favorite, LRG.

The players were a bunch of great guys. They all seemed focused and ready to roll. After getting their sizes and taking notes for the future, we exchanged info and discussed some local activities. Regardless of the rain-drenched east coast that weekend, I refused to let downtown slip away.

Surprising was the older architecture and  visually reminded me of the Federal buildings in downtown Manhattan. Granted they were half the size and the area covered much smaller, they still had an old world influence. On a negative note, I noticed the homelessness issue that plagues the city. On any given night, it is estimated that there are 3,400 individuals who are homeless in Baltimore. I was trying to enjoy the architecture of what looked like an awesome library or museum which was interrupted by several men drinking and laying on the floor of the steps and entrance. I walked by while I was taking notes to change this. Speaking with Fearon about this issue made him decide to start a charity/fundraiser. More on that subject in another article.

Anyone who is familiar with Baltimore Street is probably wondering- “did you hit the strip clubs?”. The Answer is no. I decided to save that for another trip. These adult joints are saturated like the fat in Oreo cookies. Just as deadly sweet I presume. There are 14 adult clubs on Baltimore Street alone let alone the other ones in the downtown area. So I thought lets save that huge undertaking for another time. That weekend was about making money and getting acquainted with the area. Alcohol flourished the area.  So of course I partook in some party favors and brought them back to the  hotel.Before arriving at the 4pm game my partners and I went for a stroll through the touristy areas. My photographer Ace Brown brought the camera for some quick snaps of the harbor. We browsed the Gallery Mall and smelled the salt-water air. During our pregame travels we noticed there was a St. Patty’s Day parade. This would explain many of the locals wearing green and walking unsure footed. Note to self: Do not ask directions from a  girl who can barely stand wearing a beads and a gigantic furry green hat.

It was quite refreshing when we arrived at the First Mariners Arena – Home of The AIFA’s Baltimore Mariners. The complex was very gorgeous. On the way to finding our seats, I grabbed a $7.75 tap beer. Being from NYC, I cannot complain about the price. Game on! We hollered at our new crew and started cheering.

The Mariners won 68-22. Fearon had 3 sacks and Armar Watson (one of the players I styled) had 4 interceptions. It was an exciting game. We went down to the field to snap pictures with the players and cheerleaders. Fans were also in the field getting autographs. It was a good trip. Due to scheduling difficulties we could not stay for the after party. Shout out to Fearon Wright for making this possible. Currently his team is 4-0, with the last game being a shutout win of 59-0. Go Mariners!

There’s a new twist on an existing handbag trend, and it looks like our favorite celebs already have a head start! Rachel Bilson has been snapped out & about in Los Angeles carrying a dynamite new chain link handbag by Derek Lam, shown here.

Which brings me to the trend.. chain strap handbags! While this isn’t new (Chanel classic bags come to mind), they have started to appear in all shapes & sizes, with added touches like fringe & hardware. You may prefer shoulder bags, like Rachel, but satchels & top handle bags also have chains to choose from.

And the Oscar goes to– a film some viewers just learned the name of and most never saw. The Hurt Locker not only won the Oscar for “Best Picture” , but it also made history twice. It’s the lowest grossing film to ever win the coveted award. And director Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to ever win as Best Director… beating out her ex-hubby James Cameron. Although the media had a blast with the battle of the exes, the two claim they are good friends and collaborators. And either Cameron was genuinely happy for Bigelow’s win- or he deserves an Oscar for his performance.

The Academy Awards was the classic tale of David and Goliath. The low budget film with a powerful punch and a story relevant to our time triumphed over Cameron’s socially conscious futuristic and highest grossing blockbuster of all time. Although the blow left some Avatar fans blue, Bigelow won over most hearts after she sincerely thanked our men and women in uniform in both of her acceptance speeches.

Speaking of speeches, they were pretty heartfelt and to the point this year. Mo’Nique delivered another strong and powerful one. Sandra Bullock thanked her mom.

Jeff Bridges was cool as always man. Other highlights of the evening included the John Hughes tribute where former Brat Packers took the stage to honor the late director. Although it was a bit frightening to see how some have aged, it brought a sense of nostalgia and an overwhelming desire to watch The Breakfast Club. It was especially nice to give every best actor and actress nominee a shining moment and short tribute.

I think Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin really did a great job co-hosting. They kept it classy. Things that made us go hmmm… the absence of Farrah Fawcett (who starred in 14 feature films) from the “In Memoriam” segment. What was Sean Penn talking about? The awkward Kanye West-esque moment” when Roger Ross Williams who won for his short documentary was interrupted mid sentence. I found the Ben Stiller emulating an Avatar character funny for a few seconds and then transitioning into poor taste. It’s the Academy Awards– not the Teen Choice Awards for goodness sake. And poor Kristen Stewart coughing while trying to present.

As far as fashion… Zoe Saldana had the strangest and most talked about dress. The top was stunning but what the heck was up with that bottom? Charlize Theron– who rarely has a fashion miss- really struck out. Everyone else played it safe (even Mariah was more covered than usual) with mostly metallics and a few pops of crimson (good job Penelope Cruz and Vera Farmiga… did anyone else notice how spectacular Michelle Pfeiffer looked on stage?) and blue (done especially well by Maggie and Mo’Nique). Besides golden gal Sandra Bullock with sleek locks, there were a lot of up-dos and quite a few frizzies– including SJP, JLo and Rachel McAdams.
